The Ephesus Initiative:

a unified approach

to Christian mission

in Kankakee County, IL

The Inspiration

In Acts 19, Luke detailed the Apostle Paul’s time in the city of Ephesus. Paul and his small team lived and ministered in that city for two years. During that time, the number of Christians grew significantly and a city of 250,000 was holistically impacted. They began by teaching in the synagogues and then moved to the public lecture halls until “all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord” (vs 10).

In just 24 months, Paul’s small team turned Ephesus upside down with the proclamation of the Gospel! And this proclamation not only swelled attendance in house churches; it had a holistic effect on the region, displacing some of the worst effects of social problems and economic oppression.

Kankakee County has HALF the population of Ephesus (about 110,000 residents) and likely dozens times more followers of the Way. If even a small percentage of believers could be rallied and organized, WE TOO could see holistic lift.

Kankakee County Christians can be recruited, organized and empowered to better meet the needs of their own home. The Ephesus Initiative is a proposal to organize teams of Christians to accomplish spiritual, social, economic, and physical lift in this county.

The Strategy

1) The Ephesus Initiative will serve as a unifying “Hub” for connecting church resources with relationally-based service opportunities.

2) Peniel CrossRoads will provide training for church groups within organized, consistent teams

3) A podcast series will leaven the connectivity of groups on mission and provide skill-based learning

4) Bi-annual joint prayer and worship events, beginning in November 2025

5) Celebration Days for Mission Teams to share what God is doing and pray together

The Goal

Noticeable increase in new church attenders, added conversions and discipleship groups from the chosen neighborhoods/population

20 groups from various churches and denominations doing “Mission on Purpose”

Decrease in violent crime, domestic abuse and drug overdoses
